Page to Plate: Hack Your Cupboard

In our Page to Plate series, the Teen Book Guild brings the library to their kitchen. Each post features teens checking out a cookbook from the library, trying out recipes that catch their eye (or appetite!), and sharing their culinary adventures—successes, surprises, and even the occasional kitchen mishap. Whether they’re flipping pages or flipping pancakes, these foodies are exploring how cookbooks can inspire creativity, confidence, and connection.

Grab a fork—and a library card—and dig in!

Title: Hack Your Cupboard: Make Great Food with What You've Got
by Alyssa Wiegand & Carla Carreon

Chosen by: Brooke K.

Why I picked it:

I thought that it would be interesting to learn new recipes based on food that I already have instead of having to go buy special food for the recipes.

What's inside?

This book has a collection of recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, and snacks. It has step-by-step instructions as well as measurements for the ingredients.

What recipe(s) did you try?

Chicken Salad, Roasted Asparagus, Chili

How easy were the recipes to follow?

1 – Easy Peasy
Minimal ingredients, simple steps, and hardly any cleanup. Perfect for beginners or when you're just
really hungry.

2 – A Bit of a Challenge
Basic skills required—maybe some chopping or stove time—but still totally doable without breaking a sweat.

3 – Bring Your A-Game
You'll need to follow the recipe closely and use some real kitchen tools. Not hard, but you’ve got to focus.

4 – Serious Chef Mode
Multiple steps, tricky techniques, or ingredients you've never heard of. Be ready to commit!

5 – Super Difficult
Like, “Did I accidentally sign up for a cooking competition?” level. Expect a challenge—and bragging rights if you pull it off!

Did the recipes turn out as expected?

Yes

Would you recommend this cookbook to other teens?

Yes
